Position Summary
Our client, a construction firm located in Baltimore, Maryland, is seeking an experienced Construction Project Accountant to oversee financial activities across multiple construction projects. This role is responsible for job cost tracking, AIA billing, contract compliance, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge of both construction accounting and regional requirements common within Maryland and surrounding Mid-Atlantic markets.
Key Responsibilities
Project Accounting & Cost Control
- Set up new projects, budgets, and cost codes within the accounting system.
- Track and reconcile all job costs, including labor, subcontractor costs, materials, and equipment.
- Monitor project financial performance and prepare monthly job cost reports for project managers.
- Support PMs with cost forecasting, variance analysis, and budget updates.
Billing & Pay Applications
- Prepare monthly owner billings using AIA G702/G703 or client-specific formats.
- Process subcontractor pay applications and verify accuracy against contract terms.
- Ensure timely collection of receivables; follow up on outstanding invoices as needed.
- Review and validate change orders for compliance and proper financial impact.
Contract & Compliance Management
- Maintain accurate records of contracts, purchase orders, and change orders.
- Track and collect lien waivers, insurance certificates, and W-9 documentation.
- Ensure compliance with Maryland-specific lien laws, prevailing wage requirements, and any city/port authority documentation (as applicable).
Month-End & Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly accruals, reconciliation of job cost accounts, and revenue recognition entries.
- Assist with year-end audit support and documentation.
- Provide financial reporting and cash flow analysis for ownership and senior leadership.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline (preferred but not required with equivalent experience).
- 3-5+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry.
- Experience with AIA billing and construction job costing is required.
- Familiarity with Maryland/Mid-Atlantic construction regulatory requirements is a plus.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with construction accounting platforms (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, CMiC, Procore Financials, or similar).
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data analysis).
- Strong understanding of WIP reporting, job cost structure, and revenue recognition principles.
